Carolina Wren Fine Art Linoleum Block Print

During the summer of 2020 I was doing tons of gardening as a way to keep sane. Almost every time I was in my backyard I heard a certain bird signing. I tried and tried to get a picture or at least a good look so I could ID it, but the little bugger would dance around in the trees and bushes. On the few occasions it was in plain site, it made sure it was completely backlight so I couldn't see anything except a silhouette! I was convinced it was intentionally mocking me.

Finally in late August, my mom was over for a visit when it starting singing for us. I started grumbling about that dang bird and she said "I think that's a Carolina Wren. We have one at our house too!" Thank goodness for mom.

When I started drawing this one, I knew he had to be singing! And in typical fashion, when I can't decide on a background color I printed both :)

This five color print on lush, 100% cotton paper was created from one wood block for the background, and a four color reduction cut linoleum blocks for the bird. Reduction cuts are made by carving into the same piece of linoleum, thereby destroying the block as it is printed. That means there is no going back and reprinting the image!
